Direct laser written waveguide-Bragg gratings in bulk fused silica.
Optical waveguides that incorporate Bragg gratings have been written in bulk fused silica by using the femtosecond laser direct-write method and without the need for lithography or ion-beam techniques. A single manufacturing process is used to create waveguide-Bragg grating reflectors for operation in the C band.
متن کاملRefractive index profiling of direct laser written waveguides: tomographic phase imaging
We present a technique to measure the refractive index profile of direct laser written waveguides. This method has the potential for straightforward implementation in an existing laser fabrication system. Quantitative phase microscopy, based on the Transfer of Intensity equation, is used to analyse waveguides fabricated with an ultrashort pulsed laser embedded several hundred micron below the s...
متن کاملNegative refractive index in coaxial plasmon waveguides.
We theoretically show that coaxial waveguides composed of a metallic core, surrounded by a dielectric cylinder and clad by a metal outer layer exhibit negative refractive index modes over a broad spectral range in the visible. For narrow dielectric gaps (10 nm GaP embedded in Ag) a figure-of-merit of 18 can be achieved at lambda(0) = 460 nm. For larger dielectric gaps the negative index spectra...
متن کاملGuided modes in negative-refractive-index waveguides.
We study linear guided waves propagating in a slab waveguide made up of a negative-refractive-index material, the so-called left-handed waveguide. We reveal that the guided waves in left-handed waveguides possess a number of peculiar properties such as the absence of the fundamental modes, mode double degeneracy, and sign-varying energy flux. In particular, we predict the guided waves with a di...

26 LLE Review, Volume 77 Deciding when to replace spot-damage-afflicted fused-silica optics or, in the case of inaccessible, space-based lasers, predicting the useful service life of fused-silica optics before catastrophic, pulsed-laser-driven crack growth shatters a part has recently become simpler. By empirically deriving a rule for laser-driven crack growth in fused silica as a function of t...
